Frogfoot, a subsidiary of Vox, is Excom’s contracted optic fibre infrastructure service provider. The company has been in existence since the early 2000s, but started to specialise in providing optic fibre infrastructure and managed services in 2015. It has an extensive footprint of installations already completed in the Western Cape and further afield into the Free State and Gauteng.

The network is owned, managed and maintained by Frogfoot. This means that Frogfoot is responsible for bringing fibre to the home, but not for providing data and internet services on or via the network. This is the responsibility of the respective internet service providers (ISPs), such as Afrihost, Cell C, MWEB and many more with which residents engage directly. In essence, Frogfoot provides a service to the ISPs as their customers and the ISPs, in turn, a service to end-users as their customers.

The network, classified as an open access network, allows most of the leading ISPs to provide their services over the network. The absence of a monopoly, therefore, encourages competitive pricing as well as fair play between the ISP and end-user. 

The network installation is done according to international standards and is based on the latest technology which ensures the longevity of the infrastructure and the technology used.

Frequently asked questions 

How is the underground network laid? Should we expect disruption on the estate?

Being an older residential development, Welgevonden Estate does not have a pre-installed underground duct network which can accommodate the optic fibre cables. Frogfoot makes use of micro trenching – one of the world’s most advanced methods for laying fibre to the home and business – to open up street surfaces to install the duct network into which the optic fibre cable is sited afterwards. This highly-automated process creates a fine cut in the street – 20 to 60 mm wide and 300 to 500 mm deep, usually near the edge of the roadway – and is two to three times faster than using traditional excavation methods. It has minimum impact on surrounding areas and residents should experience very little, if any, disruption while work is in progress. The process includes a professional and industrialised method for refilling and sealing the streets afterwards. 

Micro trenching, however, is not utilised on paved areas. The paving bricks in these areas are lifted and replaced by hand and the trenches are excavated manually.

What happens after completion of the (still empty) underground duct network?
The optic fibre cables are floated (“blown”) into the ducts using carefully controlled pressured air. 

Will the network reach right into my home?
No, the network only reaches up to the kerb where it ends in boundary boxes. In general these boxes are located on the pavement in-between two houses, from where it services both properties. 

It is of interest to point out that 8-core optic fibre cable is used to the boundary boxes and that data is only fed using one or two fibres. The rest of the fibres are kept in reserve for future use and expansion, if required.

How then do I then get fibre right into my home?
When a homeowner or resident enters into a data service agreement with an ISP, the ISP arranges with Frogfoot to do the network installation from the boundary box into the home. For a first-time service, whether now or in the future, this works as follows (the fibre installation remains in place when the agreement with the ISP comes to an end):


  • The homeowner or resident places an order with their preferred ISP on the Frogfoot portal (www.frogfoot.com) or directly with their preferred ISP.

  • The Frogfoot home installation contractor schedules an installation date with the homeowner or resident (4–6 weeks standard lead time). The ISP follows up with an update on the order.

  • On the day of the installation the homeowner or resident points out to the contractor the position of the connection point inside the house. 

  • Installation is free or according to the contract with the ISP. However, if the line distance between the boundary box and the connection point inside the house exceeds 30 metres, there is an additional cost of R50 per meter which the contractor will point out. This fee is payable directly to the contractor.

  • After installation, the installation contractor makes sure that everything works according to specification.

  • Once the installation is completed, Frogfoot notifies the selected ISP who will provide a router based on the terms of the agreement that the homeowner or resident has entered into with them. 


Note: In the case of rental properties, first-time installation will not be done without the written approval of the owner. At the same time, experience has shown that fibre internet access in rental properties in fact increases the demand for such properties. Owners may therefore want to consider providing (uncapped) fibre internet access as part of their rental offering and include the cost thereof in their rental contracts.

How do I get a data service once I have a line into my home?
Most of South Africa’s leading ISPs have access to and offer a service via the network. This means that end-users have a wide selection of ISPs that the can compare and choose from.

Which service provider and what package should I choose?
The beauty of Frogfoot’s open access network is that end-users have, based upon their individual needs, a wide selection of ISPs and packages to choose from. The following key factors, amongst others, should be considered and can be seen and compared by following the above link: 

  • Data speed required 

  • Upload and download speed required

  • Capped or uncapped

  • Pricing structure, amongst others a monthly or a 24-months contract

  • Kerb-to-home fibre installation cost, if any

  • Modem – included in the package or at an extra cost?

  • Other add-ons and the cost, for example porting/migrating your existing Telkom number, including a VoIP line and a VoIP phone, an app to use your cellphone in VoIP mode, etc.

How soon will Welgevonden Estate’s optic fibre network be operational?
The target date for completing the installation is the end of March 2019. 


When should I order my service?
You can place your order with your preferred ISP any time from now on. They will be notified as the network becomes live. The benefit of pre-ordering is that planning and administration will already be in place at the time when you have access to the fibre network. 

Important note: Taken into consideration the above-mentioned waiting time of between four and six weeks for new installations of the kerb to home connections, you are advised not to cancel your existing service until you have confirmation of the date when your new service will be live!


Will the network be live during power outages? Will I still have internet access? 
The following two network points must have power for the network to be functional: The network’s starting point on the estate (referred to as the primary node), and the power plug in your house where the control unit / router is plugged into. As for the primary node, this has backup power and will remain functional during power outages. For the rest, that’s over to each homeowner or resident!

Frogfoot, ‘n filiaal van Vox, is die WHEV-gekontrakteerde diensverskaffer wat die optieseveselkabelnetwerk op die landgoed installeer. Dié maatskappy bestaan reeds sedert die vroeë 2000’s en hulle spesialiseer sedert 2015 in die verskaffing van optieseveselinfrastruktuur en die bestuur daarvan. Hulle het reeds talle installasies in die Wes‑Kaap, sowel as in die Vrystaat en Gauteng, voltooi.


Frogfoot besit, bestuur en onderhou die netwerk. Dit beteken dat Frogfoot verantwoordelik is om die optieseveselkabelnetwerk tot by elke perseel aan te lê, maar nie om data- en internetdienste via die netwerk te verskaf nie. Dít is die verantwoordelikheid van die onderskeie internetdiensverskaffers (ISP’s) (internet service providers), soos Afrihost, Cell C, MWEB en talle ander met wie die inwoners individuele, direkte ooreenkomste sluit. In werklikheid verskaf Frogfoot ʼn diens aan die ISP’s en húlle ʼn diens aan die eindgebruiker, húl kliënt.


Die netwerk wat ope toegang bied, gee die geleentheid aan die meeste toonaangewende internetdiensverskaffers om hul dienste via die netwerk te verskaf. Dit bevorder kompetisie tussen ISP’s en beperk kostes vir die eindgebruiker.


Die netwerkinstallasie voldoen aan internasionale standaarde en die jongste tegnologie word aanwend om ‘n lang gebruiksduur van beide die netwerk en die tegnologie te waarborg.


Vrae wat dikwels gevra word


Hoe word die ondergrondse netwerk geïnstalleer? Moet ons ontwrigtings op die landgoed verwag?

As ‘n ouer residensiële ontwikkeling beskik Welgevonden Landgoed nie oor 'n bestaande ondergrondse pypnetwerk waarin die optieseveselkabels gelê kan word nie. Frogfoot maak gebruik van mikro-inkerwing – een van die mees gevorderde metodes ter wêreld om optiese vesel tot by huise en besighede aan te lê – om straatoppervlaktes voor te berei om die pypnetwerk, waarin die optieseveselkabels later gelê word, te installeer. Die resultaat van dié gevorderde outomatiese proses is ʼn smal slootjie in die straat – 20 tot 60 millimeter breed en 300 tot 500 millimeter diep – gewoonlik naby die rand van die ryvlak. Dié metode is twee tot drie keer vinniger as die tradisionele uitgrawingsmetode. Dit het geringe impak op die nabye omgewing en inwoners kan baie min, indien enige, ontwrigting verwag terwyl die werk aan die gang is. Die proses sluit 'n professionele en geïndustrialiseerde metode vir die hervulling en verseëling van die strate daarná in.


Mikro-inkerwing word nie op geplaveide areas gedoen nie. Die plaveistene op hierdie areas word gelig en met die hand teruggeplaas nadat die slote met die hand gegrawe is.


Wat gebeur ná die voltooiing van die (steeds leë) ondergrondse pypnetwerk?

Die optieseveselkabels word in die pypnetwerk ingevoer met lugdruk wat versigtig beheer word.


Sal die netwerk tot in my huis aangelê word?

Nee, die netwerk word net tot by die randsteen gelê, waar dit in ‘n eindpuntkassie eindig. Dié kassie word gewoonlik tussen twee eiendomme geplaas, van waar beide bedien word.


Dit is interessant om daarop te wys dat optieseveselkabels met agt kerns na die eindpuntkassies aangelê word, en dat die datavoer slegs een of twee hiervan gebruik. Die res is beskikbaar vir toekomstige uitbreiding, indien nodig.


Hoe kry ek die vesel van die eindpuntkassie tot in my huis?

Sodra ‘n huiseienaar of -inwoner ‘n diensooreenkoms met ʼn ISP aangaan, reël die ISP met Frogfoot om die veselinstallasie vanaf die netwerkkassie tot in die huis te doen. Vir ʼn nuwe installasie, nou of in die toekoms, werk dit soos volg (die veselinstallasie word nie verwyder indien die ooreenkoms met die ISP beëindig word nie):

  • Die huiseienaar of ‑inwoner plaas ʼn bestelling by hul voorkeur ISP op die Frogfoot-webtuiste (www.frogfoot.com) of direk by ʼn ISP van hulle keuse.

  • Die Frogfoot-tuisinstallasiekontrakteur skeduleer die installasiedatum (daar kan ʼn 4‑6 weke wagtyd wees). Die ISP volg die vordering met die ooreenkoms op. 

  • Op die dag wanneer die installasie gedoen word, dui die inwoner aan waar die koppelingspunt in die huis moet wees.

  • Die installasie is gratis, of die koste daarvan sal ingesluit wees by die dienskontrak met die ISP. Nietemin, sou die lengte van die kabel tussen die eindpuntkassie en die koppelingspunt meer as 30 meter wees, sal die kontrakteur die kliënt inlig dat daar ʼn bykomende koste van R50 per meter sal wees. Hierdie fooi is direk aan die kontrakteur betaalbaar.

  • Ná die installasie verseker die installasiekontrakteur dat alles volgens spesifikasie werk.

  • Sodra die installasie voltooi is, stel Frogfoot die gekose ISP in kennis, wat dan ʼn roeteerder (router), soos gespesifiseer in hul ooreenkoms met die kliënt, sal verskaf.


Let wel: In die geval van verhuringseiendomme, sal ʼn nuwe installasie nie sonder die skriftelike toestemming van die eienaar gedoen word nie. Hou in gedagte dat ondervinding getoon het dat bestaande veselinternettoegang die vraag na sodanige eiendomme verhoog. Eienaars kan dus gerus oorweeg om (onbeperkte) veselinternettoegang by hul huuraanbieding te voeg en die koste daarvan by hul verhuringsbedrag in te sluit.


Hoe kry ek ‘n datadiens nadat ek ‘n optieseveselverbinding in my huis het?

Die meeste toonaangewende ISP’s in Suid-Afrika het toegang tot en bied ʼn diens oor die netwerk. Dit beteken eindgebruikers het ʼn wye keuse van ISP’s waarvan hulle die dienste kan vergelyk en waaruit hulle kan kies.

Watter diensverskaffer en watter pakket behoort ek te kies?

Die voordeel van Frogfoot se ooptoegangnetwerk is dat eindverbruikers met hul eie vereistes as vertrekpunt uit talle ISP’s kan kies. Die volgende aspekte moet onder meer oorweeg word en kan vergelyk word op die Frogfoot-webtuiste deur die bogenoemde skakel te volg:

  • Verlangde dataspoed

  • Verlangde oplaai- en aflaaispoed

  • Beperkte of onbeperkte toegang (capped or uncapped access)

  • Prysstruktuur, onder meer ʼn maand-tot-maand- of 24‑maande-kontrak

  • Randsteen-tot-huis installasiekoste, indien van toepassing

  • Is die roeteerder (router) ingesluit al dan nie

  • Ander bykomende kostes moet in gedagte gehou word, byvoorbeeld, om jou bestaande Telkomnommer te behou (port or migrate), die beskikbaarheid van ʼn VoIP-lyn en ʼn VoIP-foon, ʼn app om jou selfoon in VoIP-status te gebruik, ensovoorts. 


Wanneer sal die optieseveseldiens in Welgevonden Landgoed operasioneel wees?

Die teikendatum vir die voltooiing van die installasie is einde Maart 2019.


Wanneer behoort ek my diens te bestel?

U kan nou reeds u diensversoek aan die ISP van u keuse rig. Hulle sal in kennis gestel word wanneer die netwerk operasioneel raak. Diegene wat vooraf ‘n diens reël, het die voordeel dat die beplanning en administrasie daarvoor reeds afgehandel is wanneer die veselverbinding beskikbaar raak.


Belangrik: Aangesien daar, soos bo genoem, ʼn wagtyd van tussen vier en ses weke is vir nuwe installasies tussen die randsteen en die huis, word u gemaan


Sal die netwerk operasioneel wees tydens kragonderbrekings? Sal ek steeds toegang tot die internet hê?

Vir die netwerk om funksioneel te wees, moet die volgende twee netwerkpunte krag hê: Die beginpunt van die netwerk op die landgoed (die primêre nodus), en die kragpunt in jou huis waar die kontrole-eenheid / roeteerder aan die kragnetwerk koppel. Die primêre nodus sal funksioneel bly tydens kragonderbrekings aangesien dit ʼn rugsteunkragfasiliteit het. Huiseienaars of ‑inwoners is self verantwoordelik vir die res.
